hatepe, lake taupŌ
Opawa Rangitoto 2C Incorporation was established in 1937 to manage the Hatepe settlement on behalf of its owners and beneficiaries.
Our history
In the 1930’s Hatepe Village was established by Robert and Bella Morehu who, while living on the whānau land, would let regular anglers camp out during the summer months. When the Hinemaiaia River was dammed in the 1940’s, more permanent sections were surveyed out. These became formal leases in the 1970’s when Taupō District Council surveyed the area.
Today, Hatepe Village is managed by Opawa Rangitoto 2c Incorporation on behalf of its owners and beneficiaries.
Our whenua
Hatepe is located in the Central North Island on the eastern shoreline of Lake Taupō, approximately 25Kms north of Turangi, and 20Kms south of Taupō town.
Opawa Rangitoto 2C Incorporation’s Committee of Management is responsible for managing approximately 100 land properties on long-term leases in Hatepe Village and surrounding areas (Hinemaiaia rivercare, Te Makomako papakainga, marae, urupa, parks and reserves).
as told by the late robert morehu:
what’s in a name?
over one hundred years ago, Te KoOTi came with his warriors down from Northland to kill te Rawiri Kahia (the eldest of four brothers, a chief who fought for Queen Victoria in the land wars and Commander of the MĀori Battalion). on hearing te koOTi was coming, TŪwharetoa gathered in Waihi at the southern end of Lake TaupŌ. the pa was deserted but for One old man; Houu. He refused to tell Te KoOTi where Te Rawiri Kahia was, so he was killed and the Pa burnt to the ground. That is where the name Hatepe comes from.
Hatepe: meaning - wiped out, finished.
